All Work, All Play – An Emphasis on Sports & Physical Education

Google the definition of play and the first thing that pops up is this: “[To] engage in an activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose.”
Jack Shonkoff, the director of Centre on the Developing Child at Harvard University, finds this language supremely frustrating. “It’s not taking a break from learning when we talk about play,” he says, rattling off a litany of cognitive, physical, mental and social-economic benefits. “Play is one of the most important ways in which children learn.”
We have all heard the old saying “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” It’s necessary that schools start putting this phrase into perspective and bringing in the importance of sports in education.
This is where Edify, as the top international school in Pune, excels and delivers.

Sports at Edify

Sports Programme at Edify International School emphasises on the development of knowledge, attitudes, and skills related to a range of physical and health-related activities.

Our sports approach is divided into two categories:

  1. Supervised
  2. Unsupervised
Supervised is a focused approach with coaches in different sports, which children can choose. But too much-supervised sports can be a detriment as it may seem like a chore and lead to pressure, especially for younger kids.
Unsupervised sporting activities give children a choice of sports and let them loose on the field, with just basic monitoring to ensure everyone is safe. Children are allowed to form their own teams, rules, etc. it is a fun and creative flow without adults for intervention.

Through school sports programme students will:

  • learn about body control and spatial awareness
  • master new skills and techniques across a variety of physical activities
  • manipulate sports equipment or apparatus
  • recognize the importance of fair play
  • understand how strategies can assist when participating in physical activities
  • use co-operative behaviors in order to function as part of a team
  • use proper safety precautions when engaging in physical activities
The school with its National and International size courts and sports infrastructure and also expert professional coaches support different sports like swimming, skating, lawn tennis, squash, cricket, and basketball. The campus offers a wide array of sports facilities with access to an indoor sports arena, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, different courts for tennis, basketball, squash, badminton, volleyball and a skating ring.

We, at Edify, believe that sports are an ideal way to increase physical fitness in students while improving their academic performance. Our goal is to see healthier and happier students reaching higher potentials in academic and personal growth.
